Wednesday Night Racing
Every year Bristol BMX runs a Wednesday night race series between April & September. This year our club has seen massive growth and we now have in excess of 100 riders racing every Wednesday night. Racing is therefore very fast and competitive. We have many families in the club where mum, dad and the kids all ride. We also have a large number of “younger” riders and it’s great to see them all helping each other out and cheering their pals on during racing. We also have a number of 40+ riders who come for the laugh and banter with their mates.
The atmosphere is friendly and inviting at Bristol – so please come down and join us one evening to try it out. You don’t have to join straight away – you can pay £6 as a visitor to see if you like it and then join later.
We will be running formula racing again this year as follows :-
Old Enough to Know Better Class
Formula 6 – 7 years and under
Formula 5 – 8 to 10 years
Formula 4 – 11 to 12 years
Formula 3 – 13 to 14 years
Formula 2 – 15 to 16 years
Formula 1 – 17 years plus
You will enter the formula at the start of the season based on your year of birth. At the end of each week’s racing the top two (or sometimes three) riders from each formula will be promoted to the next formula with the bottom two/three riders being demoted down a formula. This is worked out automatically by the computer programme.
This gives riders the opportunity of taking part in more competitive racing where they will be racing against riders of a similar ability, rather than always racing riders of their own age.
However the points for trophies are worked out according to a rider’s age – for example there are six riders aged 14. They will all start off in Formula 3 and will be given place points according to the position they finish in. Over subsequent weeks it may be that one 14 year old progresses to Formula 2 and one 14 year old is demoted to Formula 4. If the 14 year old in formula 2 comes last in his/her race, they will still be awarded first place points for their age group as they are racing in a higher formula and so are ahead of the other riders who are the same age. Similarly if the 14 year old in formula 4 comes first in his/her race, they
will be given last place points for their age group as they are in a lower formula.
Points are awarded as 25 for first, 22 for second, 20 for third, 19 for forth, 18, for fifth and so on…
If you would like a more detailed explanation about this or any other help on a Wednesday please do ask one of the committee. We can be spotted by our high viz jackets.
